Social 5: Evaluating Natural Disasters

Canada has experienced a large number of natural and human caused disasters! In this web quest you will have the opportunity to learn more about these disasters and their impact on the environment, people and economy.

TASK: Investigate some of Canada’s natural disasters, and rate the impact of these disasters on Canada’s  people, environment and the economy.

Step 1: Choose 3 Canadian natural disasters to rank.

Step 2: Research the impact on people, the environment, and the economy. Put your information in a chart form or other of your choice.

Step 3: Rank, on a scale of 1-5, the impact of the event on the three categories.

Step 4: Complete a self-assessment to see where you’re at.

Step 5: Graph your results. You can use this website or one like it. You can choose to graph by hand.

Step 6: Interpret your graph. According to your graph which disaster had the biggest overall impact? Be prepared to talk about your data.

Step 7: Class discussion: Which disaster, OVERALL, had the biggest impact.

Step 8: Establish your position on the issue IN RELATION TO THE DISASTER CHOSEN BY THE CLASS. Do you agree with the class? Disagree?
